Dreadful David 1984
Dreadful David went to stay with Granny for a while... His mum was glad to leave him there for David was a trial!
Thus begins the story of Dreadful David, a lively and inventive child just closing on three years old. I wrote Dreadful David in 1983, after Omnibus Books, upon rejecting The Powerful Pickle Problem, suggested "you write visually... have you ever thought of writing a picture book?" I hadn't, but I did. It took me a couple of hours and David was quite a success, remaining in print for a couple of decades. People still remember it fondly.
Mind you, I broke a lot of the unwritten rules in this my first picture book (though my twelfth book over all). It rhymes. David is not a good role model. David is very young. Oh, and did I mention it rhymes?
Dreadful David was published by Omnibus Books and illustrated by Craig Smith

Emma Jane's Zoo
Emma Jane had relatives who did important things. Her pa had climbed a mountain, her granny liked to sing...
Emma Jane's Zoo, illustrated by Janet Ayliffe and published by Omnibus Books in 1985, has lift-the-flap "half" pages inside. This is another lively adventure of a lively child, but Emma Jane is older than David. This book was never as popular and stayed in print much less time. |
Angie the Brave
Angie the explorer was the busiest of girls; first she dug for pirate gold and then she dived for pearls; the sharks were much too lively in the local swimming pool, so Angie had to catch them in the net she made at school...
Angie the Brave, illustrated by Sandra Laroche, was published in 1987.

I'm Big Enough

Dragon Mode
If I am in boy mode, my bed is cool. I like the racing cars on the quilt, and the books on the shelf. I even like my brother. Sort of.
My cat perches on the foot of the bed and purrs when I tickle her chin.
If I am in dragon mode, I think my bed is far too small. I almost set fire to the quilt and I knock the books off the shelf.
My brother yells at me.
I think I need ear plugs.

Wicked Rose
She was lovely as a baby and a beauty as a girl; her eyes were bright as sapphires, her teeth were gleaming pearls
